Horse Sense Helps Mental Health Professionals Explore the EAP Alternative to Traditional Therapeutic Settings

Asheville, North Carolina (PRWeb) January 29, 2007 -- On February 8, March 22 and April 22, 2007 Horse Sense of the Carolinas will host a workshop entitled Straight from the Horses Mouth: An Introduction To Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP). The workshops will be one-day events held between 9 AM and 5 PM at the 90-acre Horse Sense farm in Marshall. All participants will have hands on contact and work directly with horses. No prior horse experience is necessary.

This interactive event is geared towards health care administrators, life coaches, social workers, family therapists, substance abuse counselors, case managers and other mental health providers. Designed to educate attendees on the basics of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy based on the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model, the workshop introduces core concepts behind EAP, explains benefits over traditional therapeutic models and demonstrates EAP activities first hand.

Equine Specialists Shannon Knapp, MA, EAGALA Advanced Certified, Parelli Level I and Kacey Cramer, EAGALA Advanced Certified along with Equine Assisted Psychotherapist Laura Anthony, LCSW, EAGALA Advanced Certified will facilitate the workshops. "EAP creates a natural and non-threatening opportunity for individuals who are new to or uncomfortable with traditional therapeutic settings," says Knapp, "however, the goals of EAP are still to identify negative patterns of behavior and learn to practice new functional ones. This is why mental health professionals of all kinds can benefit from putting EAP into practice"

The goals of this workshop are to provide participants with tools they can use in the future, both professionally and personally. Attendees will compare and contrast EAP with more conventional psychotherapeutic modalities. They will also identify the benefits and risks of EAP, recognize the nature of projections and transference as explored through the EAP model, and discover the parallels between equine and human psychology.

This specialized workshop will offer participating mental health professionals the opportunity to receive educational credit. According to Knapp, the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) has approved credit of 0.6 CEU's or 6 hours of NCSAPPB general skill building. The fee for this event is $85.00 for the day. Warm clothes and closed-toed shoes are highly recommended. Light snacks and water will be provided during the workshop; boxed lunches will be available for purchase.
