Harsh Winter Weather Making Dry Skin Problems Worse: Five Tips for Keeping Hands and Feet Moisturized and Healthy-Looking

(PRWeb) February 20, 2007 -- Millions of Americans spend October through March fighting dry, cracked or chapped skin - especially on hands and feet. While some individuals are prone to having dry, cracked heels year-round, the severity of this year's winter has been particularly challenging for those with a natural tendency toward dry skin.

Foot care expert C. J. Buck, CEO of Xenna Corporation (www.xenna.com), says, "The combination of lower temperatures and reduced humidity in winter extracts moisture directly from skin. When skin is too dry, it first becomes red and then may develop cracks as moisture is lost from the epidermis."

Dry skin feels rough and uneven, and if dryness continues, the skin also begins to scale or flake. Cracked skin often occurs along the skin's natural lines, which are then accentuated.

Buck offers these tips for winter-proofing skin on hands and feet:

1. Excessive heat draws moisture from the skin, so don't overheat your home and use a humidifier to keep moisture levels up while indoors.

2. Instead of taking hot showers in winter, use lukewarm water instead. The hotter shower water is, the more moisture is extracted from the skin. After showering, pat your skin dry and apply a moisturizer right away.

3. Use a natural, mild soap that contains moisturizing ingredients, or an alcohol-free shower gel. Many shower gels contain alcohol, which will make the problem of dry skin worse.

4. Frequent hand-washing in winter is necessary to help prevent colds and flu, but be sure your hand soap contains moisturizing ingredients. Drugstores and major chains offer many choices of moisturizing hand soaps.

5. For dry, cracked skin on feet and heels, Buck suggests Xenna's petrolatum-based CalleX® Ointment. There are no drying acids in CalleX Ointment and the petrolatum keeps moisture from escaping the skin. Meanwhile, natural enzymes in CalleX Ointment soften hardened, thickened skin and remove dry, cracked, or scaly buildup.

CalleX Ointment is sold in the footcare section of Walgreens, Rite Aid, Longs and many Medicine Shoppe pharmacies, and online at www.drugstore.com and www.xenna.com. For photos of toenails and heels before and after using Xenna products, click on www.xenna.com.
